Monday, August 11, 9pm, $10 at the door

We are totally thrilled to kick off a string of incredible live music shows with a visit from two of this country’s best loved alt country/roots musicians. Come early and grab a bite to snag the best seats!

Carolyn Mark, Victoria, BC

Country/roots chanteuse and troublemaker, Carolyn Mark is the  musical “Queen of Vancouver Island.” Her irrepressible personality lends extra depth and colour to her sharp songwriting and remarkable voice. She’s shared the stage with the likes of Sarah Harmer, Wanda Jackson, The Handsome Family, The Sadies & Blue Rodeo. You may have heard of Mark’s collaboration with Neko CaseThe Corn Sisters, or a recent, Juno nominated album with NQ ArbuckleLet’s Just Stay Here.

From a Metromix, New York  Review:

“Mark’s music is so authentic in its back porch vibe, it seems to come with its own direct link to Loretta Lynn‘s ’60s heyday – like her heroes, Mark is not afraid to rail against a man too drunk to understand his own f#@k-ups. Not to say Mark is some kind of saint: Her gigs are known for their off-balance candor and ribald humor as much as the homespun tunes. Go for the music, stay for the dirty jokes.”

Li’l Andy, Montreal, QC

From his website:

Pop Montreal Festival calls Andy “Montreal’s greatest country songwriter today.” His new record is a song-cycle that combines country and folk traditions and influences as diverse as Hank Williams and 1920s German composer Kurt Weill to create a new breed of lyrically-based folk music. The new album builds on the dark, brooding sound Andy perfected on 2011’s, All Who Thirst Come to the Waters, which lead The Village Voice to proclaim: “This is Roots-based Americana that actually deserves to be made.”

Andy has appeared at CMJ, the Edmonton Folk Festival, SXSW, Canadian Music Week, and the Halifax Pop Explosion, performing on bills with Steve Earle, Neko Case, Nick Cave, Calexico and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.
